Spousal Support
In some cases, spousal support (alimony) may be awarded to one of the parties. Spousal support is a monthly payment from one spouse to the other based on a long list of factors. The typical reasons for awarding spousal support include a large gap between the parties’ incomes, where one party has stayed home to be a homemaker while the other parent was the breadwinner, where one person needs assistance so that they can re-enter the job market or obtain training to do so, and where there are small children and it is in the best interests of the children to have one parent remain in the home for a time. The amount of monthly support and the length of time you would pay or receive support will depend on the specifics of your case. There are no set rules for determining the amount or duration of support.
