Child Support
Child support is an ongoing monthly payment that one parent pays to the other parent for the benefit of their child. The amount of child support paid is determined by a formula based on the income of each parent. The key factors in the child support formula are each parent’s gross monthly income from any source, the cost of health insurance, the cost of work related childcare, the number of overnights each parent has with the child, and whether either parent has children from a prior relationship. If one parent is unemployed, the law presumes that he or she is capable of earning minimum wage based on a 40 hour work week.
